Individual Diaries and Expense Documents in the Italian Consumer Expenditure Survey
Carlo Filippucci and Maria Rosaria Ferrante
Abstract:This article deals with the effectiveness of the diary in the Italian consumer expenditure survey. Two experiments are presented: one using individual diaries and the other the compilation of a household diary based on expense documents. Households had no problem in dealing with individual diaries even though their effectiveness clearly depends on household socio-economic level. Individual diaries allowed us to find underreporting, especially for some important items. On the contrary, expense documents were not found to be effective in recording, but the experiment proved useful for understanding recording behavior. The results give some suggestions for improving the Italian survey.
Keywords:Data collection instruments; underreporting; proxy response; aided recall.
